Deucalion at Encontro de Computação Avançada 2024: A Highlight of HPC Innovation
On November 5-6, 2024, the Deucalion Team participated in the Encontro de Computação Avançada 2024, hosted by the University of Beira Interior in Covilhã, Portugal. The annual event, organized by the Rede Nacional de Computação Avançada (RNCA), brought together users, technicians, and partners to discuss the latest developments in Portugal’s high-performance computing (HPC) ecosystem.
The Deucalion Team provided attendees with an in-depth look into the capabilities of Deucalion, one of Portugal's leading supercomputers. The team hosted a workshop featuring a live demonstration of Deucalion’s powerful features, showcasing its capabilities and applications to an engaged audience of HPC professionals and enthusiasts.
In addition to the workshop, António Sousa, a researcher at the Minho Advanced Computing Center (Deucalion Coordinator, University of Minho and INESC TEC), presented on the architecture and capabilities of Deucalion. His presentation covered Deucalion's compute nodes, storage solutions, software stack, and the broad array of applications supported by this advanced system.
Another highlight was the presentation by Bernardo Malaca (Deucalion User Support and INCD), who discussed “HPC Software Portability: x86 to ARM.” In this session, Malaca shared insights on why HPC users should consider porting code from x86 to ARM architectures, the potential challenges in achieving software portability, and best practices for rapid and effective implementation. His talk provided practical takeaways for attendees looking to maximize compatibility and performance across diverse computing architectures.
