Testimonies

  • Sandra Rafael, University of Aveiro

“Working with the MACC team was a fantastic experience. The tailored, constant and thorough monitoring made a huge difference. From a technical-scientific point of view, the work carried out by MACC helped revolutionise a stagnant model, by increasing its efficiency and computational performance, while preserving the fundamental features, thus contributing to a new set of research opportunities in this field.”

  • Miguel Nóbrega, University of Minho

“The possibility of having access to MACC had a major influence in the Computational Rheology @ IPC team activities. The additional computational resources provided by MACC, allowed us increasing the accuracy of our computational studies, dealing with more challenging/realistic industrial problems, achieving results faster, and widening the areas covered by the team activities.”

  • Joana Matos, CoLAB NET4CO2

“The privilege of using BOB is crucial to the performance of complex fluid dynamics studies at the CoLAB NET4CO2, aiming the implementation of the NETmix technology for the development of new products and processes for a sustainable CO2 circular economy. The great support of MACC's team enabled us to be pioneers in the implementation of the software Ansys Fluent in Bob and successfully use HPC, reducing our simulation time by a factor of 10.”

  • Tiago Oliveira, Physics Department & Centre of Environmental and Marine Studies, University of Aveiro

“The MACC team was always friendly and available to help us. Their help was essential to fixing some issues installing and compiling our model. Then, we used up to 1000 cores in BOB to simulate extreme wave conditions on the Azores coast. We also analyzed the model performance and scalability, considering different numerical schemes and parallelization algorithms.”

  • Diana Lousa, NOVA Institute of Chemical and Biological Technology

“Bob's resources contributed to the design of biopharmaceuticals against SARS-COV-2 and its variants, which we are now testing in our lab.”

  • Carlos Silva, Instituto Superior Técnico

“The BOB's architecture we’ve been using is crucial to support our research at Instituto Superior Técnico. BOB is clearly the best infrastructure (with excellent technical support) in Portugal. Interacting with BOB's team has been excellent. They manage to solve all problems quickly, showing great competence and professionalism.”

  • Pedro Pacheco, Transport Phenomena Research Center

“As a PhD student developing a thesis in numerical modelling of wear in gas-solid cyclones, the BOB platform at MACC was my first contact with HPC. My background is in chemical engineering, and I was concerned that the complexity of implementing a CFD workflow would be beyond my skillset. But, with the support of the MACC team and thanks to the excellent documentation behind the platform, we managed to run high-fidelity simulations of fluid dynamics in cyclones, using up to 256 cores and achieving a degree of physical fidelity that would otherwise be impossible”

  • Rui Vieira, Observatório Oceânico da Madeira, ARDITI

“We found the MACC through the National Advanced Computing Network (RNCA) and we had the opportunity to perform coupled numerical simulations of the atmosphere and ocean on the BOB platform by the FCT Advanced Computing Project. We think that the MACC team were friendly and professional, it was a good and productive experience. They gave us the initial push and the documentation had what we needed. It was important for us to carry out several simulations to improve our coastal ocean circulation forecasting system for the Madeira Archipelago.”

  • Tarsila Castro, Centre of Biological Engineering - University of Minho

“As a researcher performing Molecular Dynamics Simulations of peptides and proteins using GROMACS, the BOB/MACC platform was crucial to benchmarking a vast library of novel peptides, helping the development of a new project. Our simulations required only 64 cores each but were only possible to run a great number of them, in a 6 month-window, thanks to the well-organised HPC administration, support team, and MACC performance. The MACC Documentation web page is very helpful, providing full supporting information. The MACC team was equally accessible, helping since the very beginning. I hope to continue using MACC infrastructure in future works.”

  • Mauricio Breternitz, ISCTE

“Our project investigates the use of deep neural networks for COVID detection from customer symptoms. This involves the exploration of huge parameter spaces. We make extensive use of parallelism on the multiple-core MACC systems, including vector units and GPU acceleration. The MACC team is very responsive and user-friendly, and the support and management software facilities are intuitive and readily accessible.”
