Europe's supercomputer network has grown again: MareNostrum 5 was inaugurated in Barcelona
On 21 December, the eyes of the supercomputing world were on Barcelona, where the latest supercomputer in the EuroHPC network, MareNostrum 5 (MN5), was inaugurated. The machine, which has a maximum performance of 314 Pflops (314 million billion calculations per second), represents a milestone in European science and technology and confirms the commitment to supercomputing.
The new supercomputer has been co-funded 50% by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation, the Government of Catalonia and the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, together with Portugal and Turkey. This joint effort will allow Portuguese researchers to take advantage of this resource, for example in the 4th Call for Advanced Computing Projects — currently underway — where around 5% of MN5's capacity can be allocated to Portuguese projects.
From 2023 on, the portuguese scientific community has two new powerful resources at its disposal: the 10 petaflops Deucalion supercomputer and now MareNostrum.
